HOW IT ALL BEGAN......
The concept originated in Maine in response to the deaths of 18 teenagers in alcohol-related highway crashes. Seven of the teens were from one community. Parents in the community were devastated and determined not to let this happen again. In an effort to prevent the incapacitating injuries and deaths that were often the result of teens driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, the parents organized "Project Graduation". From that school the idea spread. By 1985, 95% of the high schools in Maine were hosting successful chemical-free parties.

The parents of Senior students attending New Milford High School held the first NMHS Project Graduation event in 1988 and the concept has been growing ever since. The planning takes place over the course of four years and is mainly financed by parent contributions and fundraising. The entire evening kept secret from the students, who are taken by bus directly from the graduation ceremony, to a surprise location. Only the steering committee is aware of the location of the venue.
The anticipated cost of the venue and events of the evening for Project Graduation 2015 are expected to exceed $35,000. The Project Graduation 2015 committee feels that while this is quite a large sum of money, it is in line with the expenses incurred for similar events held across the country and well worth the price of keeping the New Milford High School Seniors safe on a night that is traditionally a high risk for motor vehicle accidents.
Thank you in advance for your very much appreciated support of our young adults
as they take the next step in their lives.
